so much better than people my age? I met a woman who works for another school (relax, she's 20 years older than me) and I felt like I was talking to someone I've known for years. Very rarely do I connect like that with people my own age (mid-20s).

depends on I guess how you grew up. I grew up going to car show and car events with my grandparents so I was always around their friends and older people. I have a hard time with people my age as well, which cause more problems in the dating world.

I'm the same. I guess being introverted and frequently conversing with adults did it.

I find that some folks connect better when they have something interesting to say...that transcends age...

I agree as soon as I was out of school and just working its been downhill, but even in school I had problems connecting.

Because us older people actually used Windows NT when it was a current operating system :D

I am the last person who should be giving social advice, but you probably don't worry as much with older people. you worry about saying the wrong thing with people your own age and have issues.

I felt the same way for years and assumed it was because growing up I spent a lot of time with my older brother(+12 years) and sister(+9 years) and their friends. I am younger than you but after meeting people that I like, I kind of "got over" the problem. I sitll have trouble, but I usually don't have much in common with them, or don't really want to talk too much in the first place.
I's possible you aren't talking to the right people.

I have no idea what I am talking about, please don't listen to what I am saying.

I've found this was the case for me but after three years in college my social skill when it comes to connecting to any age group are shit. I can barely have a conversation with older people I know personally and have had great conversations with. Meanwhile starting a conversation with someone my age has gone from "eh it's a bit of work but I'll try" to "nope" even if I am under the "influence" and this other person is a cute girl. And don't even get me started on the downward spiral that is my grammar, like how is junior year of high school the high point of my grammatical prowess!

It's actually kinda easy. "Older" means they've been adults, have made mistakes, learned from them, and now are reflecting those aspects back at you when you talk to them. Think of it from the standpoint of not age, but adult experience. A 22 year old has say 4 years of adult experience, while a 42 yr old has 24 - 6 times. Stability, maturity and wisdom are all words that describe my own needs/wants, more than reactions, flakiness and not getting it (yet.)

It could also mean you're just more mature for your age than others - it does happen, you know. (And by that, I don't mean you're overall perfect or something compared to other young people, but maybe there are aspects of your behavior that allow older folks to appreciate and accept you more.)

Lord knows I've run some teens and 20 somethings through the land here, and fuck me with a stick but only 2% were "keepers" in my mind and I was glad when the rest moved on. Not because they were bad people, or evil, or even immature (though one was), they just didn't know how to get along with other people, yet, not really.

That was long winded. But it precedes the actual comment, which is this: Go with what you like. Don't worry what others have to say about it, including your own internal voice - tell that thing to just shut up and keep making your networks strong.

I don't really have issues worrying about what I say to others, moreso I find that a lot of people are just so involved in themselves. It could be a NY thing though, as I've talked to many people about that notion and they all seem to agree to an extent.

I feel the same way. For some reason talking to old women is the easiest thing in the world. One of my favorite pastimes is chatting up the sample ladies at costco. But really, most people my age are just barely maturing.

I wouldn't worry so much about it. When I grew up my dad had good friend that we used to visit as a family a lot. When I started living my own life after I turned 18, one day I just came to the realization that I liked the man's company a lot, and if I wanted him to remain my friend I would have to visit him myself. So I made an effort to. And now he's my friend also, despite there being most of 50 years between us.

We have different views and life experiences but that makes our chats all the more interesting.

Other than how hard it was to setup device drivers on it the OS was perfect.

Case in point: while trying to help you with your problem, all I did was talk about my problem and how I overcame it. I didn't give you any real advice, I just ended up talking about myself.
